This morning, after a night of wonderful sleep, I did a short workout at marathon pace and then went to the expo to pick up my packet and do a bit of browsing.
Morning Run
The plan from coach called for 5 minute warm-up, 20 minutes at marathon pace, and 5 minute cool down. I quickly remember how difficult it is to run at a steady pace in a busy city and was relieved to find the reflecting pool near the Christian Science church. I did several laps around the pool.
Expo
The race bib and shirt pick-up was smooth. The actual product expo was a bit congested but I wasn’t seeking anything in particular. I did purchase the obligatory official race merchandise … a hooded sweatshirt. I tried on the windbreaker that many seem to prefer but I don’t often wear windbreakers and I am between a L and XL…sleeves to short and sleeves too long.
Learn CPR
I was asked if I wanted to learn CPR. The BAA makes a great effort to teach runners and spectators CPR. Sudden cardiac arrest can and does happen … even to ultra fit runners.
Elite Men’s Mile
After leaving the convention center I walked to the finish area. I arrived just as the elite men were about to race one mile. The field include an Olympic Silver Medalist and other internationally known runners. I have never seen people run so fast face to face before. It is a 3 lap course and the winner pulled away from the field in amazing fashion on the final lap.
Course Recon
My host was kind enough to drive me out to about mile 8 on the course and drive me back on the race route. I was especially grateful for the chance to lay eyes on the Newton Hills and Heartbreak Hill before I arrive there on foot tomorrow morning.
Laying Low
Now I am laying low with my feet up until the pasta dinner at City Hall Plaza.
Enjoy!
