Soft Skills for EMS Professionals and Educators (#31daysofEMS)

Sunday posts at Everyday EMS Tips are generally have a theme of self-improvement and/or a connection to physical, mental, or emotional health. Dr. Joseph Weiner was a two-time guest on the EMSEduCast podcast in 2009. Joe is a clinical psychologist in New York City. He was an ideal podcast guest because he both answered questions from the hosts and asked us questions to better understand the topic and stimulate additional discussion.

Visit the EMSEduCast archives to listen to these episodes with Dr. Weiner:

Episode 6: Teaching Compassion. Joe helped us answer these questions. Can you teach compassion?  Can you tell students and new people what it is like in the field?  How do you deal with the difficult patient or turn off at the end of a shift?

Episode 13: Dealing with Loss. This conversation primarily focused on the untimely loss of a student from an EMS education program, but the principles could just as easily be applied to a line of duty death situation or injury that leads to the premature retirement of a co-worker.
