One of the lost pleasures of modern life is the “drop in” or “stopping by.” We feel compelled to call first (or text) to schedule a visit. When I ask, ”Is it a good time?” the reply too often is “I will check my calendar and get back to you so we can schedule something.”
Michael Perry, one of my favorite authors, reminds us of the magic of stopping to chat with a neighbor as almost always (or just always) better than staying home to watch TV or surf the web.
Perry weaves together the bio of farmer and welder and fix-it guy Tom Hartwig with his own realizations about aging, parenting, farming, and neighboring.
Read Visiting Tom, enjoy, and visit a neighbor.
