In this video members of the Lancaster PA, Lancaster General Health EMS discuss their first calls, most memorable calls, and advancements in EMS. Listening to the providers I was really struck how many of the calls were about pediatric encounters, especially pediatric death. In many cases the providers were discussing preventable tragedies.
Yesterday, while bike riding, I witnessed very troubling parental behavior. A male, presumably a father, was riding his riding lawn mower, cutting the grass, and drinking a beer (Miller Lite). As he drove around the yard a young girl, presumably a daughter, ran circles around the lawnmower. She ran in front of, behind, and next to the mower. I was so stunned all I could do was stare, mouth agape as I rode by.
Back to the Lancaster EMS providers. They tell stories of parents and patients that shared gratitude for making a save. It is wonderful to tell stories of trying to save the life of a child. It would even better to not have stories to tell about children injured or killed.
