Book Review: Frantic by Katherine Howell

[amazon-product text=”Frantic” type=”text”]033045241X[/amazon-product] is the first novel by Australian author and former paramedic, Katherine Howell. The fast-moving plot follows a paramedic, Sophie Phillips, and her police officer husband Chris after he is shot and their one year old son is abducted. Intertwined with Chris and Sophie’s story is the investigation by the detectives assigned to the case.

Lethal Knowledge
Sophie is a compassionate and knowledgeable paramedic that uses her skills to save lives and fight valiantly against inevitable death. That same knowledge, like all paramedics, gives her the ability to be lethal. In one particularly gripping scene from the book Sophie teeters on the edge of making a life or death decision for a patient.

Paramedic Heroine
This is the latest novel I have read that features a paramedic as a primary character. I quickly connected with Sophie and felt like I already knew her as she is an amalgamation of many paramedics that I have served with. I am also the parent of young children and felt strong empathy towards Sophie’s willingness to do anything for her son.

Everyday EMS Tips Recommended
Frantic was more than a good novel featuring EMS. It is a great novel that I enjoyed thoroughly. Katherine Howell has set the bar for EMS related literature. Frantic is a crime thriller with compelling characters and a rapidly moving story. She is also the author of [amazon-product text=”The Darkest Hour” type=”text”]0330462407[/amazon-product] .
